What Makes a Book Fun?
If you don't enjoy reading, you have the wrong books. Let's talk about what makes a book fun.
An enjoyable book is one which gets you interested. Sounds simple. Right? The question then becomes, "What is interesting?"
If a book is not fun you'll find something better to do. This goes for both kids and adults. Humans have active minds and restless bodies. A book which catches and holds your attention is one which gives you something to do. It has to engage your mind, your emotions, your senses. It has you wondering what comes next and enjoying the ride.
Fun Books for Kids
The best books speak to children at their level about things which interest them. More, a great book gets a kid to do something. Some kids love thinking and imagining, some love looking at pictures, and some need to be touching, or making things with their hands. Fun books for kids come in many shapes, sizes, and types.
Top books for kids are robust as well as engaging. They treat children as the intelligent beings they are, rather than talk down to them. They draw kids in with fabulous double-page illustrations, and spark their imaginations. What's your favorite book from when you were a kid? The chances are that book is still popular today. The best books are timeless.
Fun Books for Teens
Teens often seem like beings from another planet, mysterious, maybe even unapproachable. Adolescence is a time of transition when kids are no longer kids, but not adults yet either. It's a time of adjustment for everyone in the family. Books may be "in" or "out" and nothing in-between.
Individuality shows in teen reading choices, with personal interests becoming more pronounced and rejection of authority figures all too common (from the adult point of view). Books can be an escape, a cultural phenomena, or a place to seek the knowledge a teen would not otherwise find. While books may feel like "old hat" compared to social networks, the internet, and texting, there's plenty of space in the life of teens for fun books.
Fun Books for Adults
You're either an avid reader, or you're not. Some adults barely pick up a book from year start to year end. Others wouldn't dream of being without a good book to read, or, better yet, a stack of books. If you make regular visits to the library and bookstore you probably already know which books you like. Maybe you have favorite authors, a science fiction collection, or a bookcase full of reference books about your hobby.
While it's easy to pick out fun book for yourself, purchasing for another adult can be a hit or miss affair. An avid reader always welcomes a gift certificate for an online bookstore, or for their local bricks and mortar equivalent. E-readers, such as the Amazon Kindle, are attracting many adult readers. They are shiny, new, convenient, and the quality is impressive. They're becoming popular gifts.
